This year has been a great year for games. While I believe nothing can be added to the “greatest of all time” list, 2016 was filled with quality games in all genres. DOOM, Uncharted 4, Final Fantasy XV, Overwatch, Inside, and more are just a few of the great games that released this year; every one an exceptional addition to the PlayStation library. However, greatness truly awaits next year with highly anticipated titles and high profile exclusives for PlayStation. Here is a compilation of games to keep on your radar as 2017 begins.
Resident Evil VII: Biohazard (January 24)
At PlayStation Experience this year, I had the pleasure of trying the next iteration of the popular survival horror franchise, Resident Evil, on PlayStation VR. Resident Evil VII: Biohazard deviates from its over the shoulder, third person gameplay with a first-person experience brimming with tension. Playing the demo that initially released a few months ago, the sense of dread and horror had me at the edge of my seat. Using PS VR to play the updated version of the demo added an extra layer of immersion that wasn’t necessary, but is a great addition nonetheless (even if I did feel a little queasy). Resident Evil VII: Biohazard is the first big release of 2017, and will undoubtedly bring massive scares to many PlayStation players when January 24 comes around.
Horizon: Zero Dawn (February 28)
Without a doubt, Horizon: Zero Dawn is every PlayStation player’s most anticipated game. Developed by Killzone developer Guerrilla Games, Horizon: Zero Dawn follows Aloy as she discovers the mysteries of her world. This is the first time Guerrilla Games has created an open-world game; judging by what I’ve played of it, it will be one of the best titles the PlayStation 4 has to offer.
Drawn to Death (TBD)
Developed by SIE San Diego Studios and The Bartlett Jones Supernatural Detective Agency, Drawn To Death is a third person multiplayer arena shooter with a whole lot of personality. It’s classroom doodle aesthetic incorporated with goofy characters and unorthodox weaponry conceive a surprisingly exceptional game. When I played it at PlayStation Experience this year, I was not expecting to have as much fun as I had. After the event was all said and done, Drawn To Death was one of the best games of the show and now considered one of my most anticipated games in 2017.
Cosmic Star Heroine (TBD)
As I stated in my preview, Cosmic Star Heroine is everything you love about JRPGs. Clearly inspired by classics like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy, Cosmic Star Heroine is a love letter to the greatest JRPGs of all time. While not mold-breaking, Zeboyd games have produced the perfect tribute while creating their own unique universe. The fun and intricate gameplay, interesting characters, and enticing world make Cosmic Star Heroine one a must-play game when it (hopefully) releases next year.
Persona 5 (April 4)
The long-awaited sequel to the critically lauded JRPG series Persona, Persona 5 will finally make its way to the west on April 4, 2017. The last traditional Persona title to release was in 2012 in the form of Persona 4: Golden, a PS Vita port of Persona 4 which originally released on the PlayStation 2 in 2008. With a series that has garnered tons of praise from fans and critics alike, Persona 5 is a PlayStation exclusive that cannot be missed.
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (TBD)
With a brand new trailer shown at PlayStation Experience’s keynote this year, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom seems to be the sequel fans have been waiting four. The inaugural release, Ni no Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch presented its players with a beautiful and melancholy story about loss and love. The sequel seems to evoke those same feelings on a grander scale. If paired with the same great combat system and charming aesthetic, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom will be one of the best games of 2017.
Mass Effect: Andromeda (Spring 2017)
The second non-exclusive title on this list is probably the most anticipated title of the year. Everyone’s favorite video game space opera is coming back with a new galaxy to explore and new characters to interact with. With a release window of Spring 2017, Mass Effect: Andromeda’s arrival cannot come soon enough.
If all of these titles do see the light of day next year, we may have one of the greatest years in gaming history. From new franchises to fan favorites, 2017 will cater to all audiences with exceptional games from every genre.
